Hi There!
We are just a couple of middle school teachers from Kennesaw, Georgia who retired recently (2015) and are heading out to see the world. Our 33 foot Winnebago will be taking us, along with our dog and cat, to lots of State and National Parks around the United States. It is probably our background in wildlife biology that makes us want to explore everything we can and maybe share a few of our experiences along the way. Gawrsh, thanks. You and so many of our colleagues are just as dedicated to good teaching. Jackie and I really do have a passion for teaching and would probably still be doing it, if not for the behavior battles, lack of respect for the profession and the crazy evaluation system that found veteran teachers to be “emerging.” I think two cycles back, the best you could hope to be was “proficient.” No wonder there is a teacher shortage!

What a marvelous site you’ve developed! It has got to be great to see the country, talk with new people and drink fine beer. Glad we were able to enjoy a couple brews this past week! Some day perhaps, my adventures will be close to yours…

Wow! You have a very busy year planned! Sounds great! We have a couple trips planned, but my biggest decision for each week is usually whether to shop at Publix or Kroger!!!

Hello. I am a shark conservationist (Shark Advocates International) working to promote the recovery of endangered sawfish. I love your photo from last April of two sawfish at Atlantis in Nassau. I have been enjoying making totems for family & friends for a few years now. I have always used ‘Goop clear marine’ glue but must admit it sometimes comes apart. Usually a quick fix with some cleaning, sanding & re-gluing.
I would love to make some hanging totems but am nervous about the Goop glue. Can you please tell me what you use? I haven’t aquired my glass drill bit yet but that’s next also.

Thank you so much for the kind words. The designs come after spending a fair amount of time stacking and re-stacking to see what will work best. It also depends on what I can find in the local thrift shop. As for the adhesive, I use 100% silicone in a tube – I find the GE version works best.
I do have my share of “oops” repairs due to falling branches, wind, deer running through the yard and a few of the hooks came off the hanging ones. That was primarily due to a coating of paint that might have been on the top piece and it peeled off, but the silicone held. Repairs usually involve razor blades to remove the old silicone, a few new glass pieces and good cleaning, then new silicone to put it all together again. It is also important to get a good seal with no moisture trapped between, and even then moisture can get inside with heating and cooling for the ones outside. If too much water intrudes, it is just a matter of cutting through the silicone, separating, drying and reapplying.
Good luck and I would love to see some of your designs if you post on Pinterest or elsewhere. Take care with the drilling, it is easy to crack or crash into the plates with the drill.

Thanks for the tip about the silicone adhesive. I will post some pics when our snow clears. We still have approx 3 ft. in our yard but the new spring sun is starting to melt it.

Thanks Donna, glad you enjoy them.
I use clear 100% silicone caulk. Apply a continuous bead on the bottom of pieces that are to be joined and wipe smooth and excess. Be sure there are no air gaps. 2 days are best to fully dry, especially the hanging ones. Don’t work too fast, otherwise things will slip and slide.
